Performance marketing is a comprehensive term that refers to advertising programs where marketing partners are paid on the performance of their advertising programs. Advertisers (or merchants) pay their performance advertising partners (also known as affiliates or publishers) when an action is completed, such as a sale or completion of a lead. Stated another way, performance advertising rates are set by the advertisers, based on their customer activity; traditional advertising rates are set by the marketing partner based on audience or viewer potential. Performance marketing includes affiliate marketing, CPA (cost per action) marketing, search marketing, lead generation, and other types of performance based programs.

Performance Marketing Alliance, Inc., officially launched December 29, 2008, as a self-sustaining non-profit organization supported by membership dues, directed by volunteer industry leaders voted on to a board of directors.
